Tetrahydrofuran

CAS No: 109-99-9
Molecular Formula: C4H8O

Tetrahydrofuran, Reagent - also known as THF; Diethylene oxide; oxacyclopentane; tetrahydrofuran and stabilizer; 1,4-Epoxybutane; Butylene oxide; cyclotetramethylene Oxide; Furan, tetrahydro. Tetrahydrofuran is a colorless, water-miscible organic liquid with low viscosity at standard temperature and pressure. As one of the most polar ethers with a wide liquid range, it is a useful solvent. Its main use is however as a precursor to polymers. Tetrahydrofuran has an odor similar to its chemical cousin, diethyl ether, but is a much less potent anesthetic than diethyl ether.

About 200 million kilograms of tetrahydrofuran are produced annually. Although it is the hydrogenated derivative of furan, Tetrahydrofuran is not generally produced in this way. The most widely used industrial process involves the acid-catalyzed dehydration of 1,4-butanediol. Tetrahydrofuran can also be synthesized by catalytic hydrogenation of furan derived from pentose. Although this method involves renewable resources, it is not widely practiced.
