DL-Methionine is an a-amino acid with the chemical formula HO2CCH(NH2)CH2CH2SCH3. This essential amino acid is classified as nonpolar. It aids in the body's detoxification process. DL-Methionine especially benefits those suffering from arthritis, fibromyalgia and depression - a condition that is often accompanies chronic pain conditions. This essential amino acid has been used to reduce the toxic effects of radiation and it improves healing from surgery and other wounds. Methionine is well absorbed in the brain where it is converted into S-adenosylMethionine (SAM-e), which may increase catecholamines in the brain. Diets deficient in this essential amino acid may result in a destructive breakdown and metabolism of protein.
